He did some forging and welding in high school and later did a stint in the army and working in the oil fields. In 1977 he taught himself to make spurs after studying the construction of vintage pairs that he had acquired for his personal Texas spur collection. Ray has been married to his wife Dorris since 1949, resides in Weatherford, TX
